On a sidenote… I just paused for a moment and wondered if there were any capilene thongs. A quick google confirms their existence. Rest assured humanity, if a garment can be made of it, someone has made a thong with it. This should be the first law of fibers.
Kudos to Patagonia for being such recycling badasses.
The only possible downside is that they seemed to put all their focus on underwear; I imagine that any capilene clothing item could be recycled in their program. I bet there are a lot more old and ratty capilene shirts and (liner) socks than capilene underwear. Of course, underwear is funnier than socks or shirts…

I couldn’t get more than 15 seconds into this thing. It is a full assault on everything good and decent in this world (much like Hillary Clinton herself).

For most of my life I thought that the concept of “having a hero” was bizarre. A few years ago, I came across writings and recordings of Lawrence Lessig. Immediately awed, engaged and inspired I referred to him as my “IP hero”. Clearly, he he is more than a hero in the single field of intellectual property. This video is an evocative and moving call for endorsement of Barrack Obama over Hillary Clinton. It is longer than most video clips on the web, but every minute is worth it.

Well, another possibly/vaguely illegal Superbowl party has been thrown. And what fun it was! Our friend Kelly makes some really awesome fried-in-lard hot wings, and they were absolutely awesome. I just ate the leftovers for lunch - and I’m glad they’re gone… A few more and I’m sure I’d have a massive cardiac failure.
To poke fun of the NFL’s silly restrictions on football games, I will now describe part of the game - without authorization of any sort.
The Giants won. They deserved it too.
Bill Belichick (the Patriots coach) left the field before the game was over, displaying an almost alarming lack of class. Not that most people expected much in the way of sportsmanship from someone who can get the NFL to cover-up a bit of cheating here and there.
Terry Bradshaw needs to have someone build him a “violating-an-interviewee’s-personal-space” alarm.
If you ask me, the best part of the game came right after the Giants scored the touchdown that sealed the win. The camera immediately panned up to Payton Manning, who was watching from a skybox. It was touching, perhaps even a bit heartwarming to see him cheering on his brother like that. That simple camera pan at the right moment showed that there are still a few decent producers out there, despite the Fox’s moronic animated football robots (how can you screw up robots Fox? Jeez!).
Tom Petty at halftime was decent.
Surprisingly, the Puppybowl was weak this year, going to commercial far too often during the Superbowl halftime. Major bummer.
Also, the Etrade baby commercials were the best.

Of course, most people can smell the impending failure a mile away - but for those who haven’t thought about it yet, Fake Steve Jobs analyzes the situation perfectly.

I can’t really comment on this, it’s just so…. sad
And to think that I’m trying to lose a few pounds. How backwards can this world get?

Sonofabi*%#. It’s been quite the day. I made a mistake last night and have been paying for it all day - and the culmination of all the thrashing about borked up things for many, many other people. I can’t wait to go home and be done with the constant stream of today’s problems.
The good news? Tomorrow is a new day.

Also, those glasses are indeed famous.
Way to stand up to that beastly woman. Rock on Cory!

This makes me want to put him in a friendly headlock and give him a nougie…
Chavez will give you 100 gallons of free heating oil if you live in the right state and qualify.
Just what in the hell does he think he’s doing? Is he really sure that a passive-aggressive statement like this won’t just fly right over the heads of “the people”? Will this endear him in the hearts of the Venezuelans that back him? Still, it’s nearly adorable, in a teenage kind of way.

This post is sort of a placeholder for myself, but may be interesting for other similarly-challenged would-be egg poachers. Over at Slashfood, I just read a post about poaching eggs. I love poached eggs, and I consider a good Eggs Benedict to be the absolute height of breakfast pleasure.
Also, I love eggs for breakfast. I’ve been able to make all things egg-breakfast-related with relative competency except: Omelets, Eggs over Easy, and POACHED EGGS.
Poached eggs baffle me. I haven’t even tried that often, because every attempt yields disheartening results at best and egg-splattered temper-tantrums at worst.
Omelets? Well, let’s just say they they usually turn out to be a delicious scrambles, with only an occasional omelet produced. This does not bother me too much, but I would love to get better. That’s another blog post though.
Eggs over Easy? Well, in my opinion, the cardinal sin of of egg frying is a broken or hard yolk - which I seem to run up against most of the time when attempting this. I’m certain I can master this one with some more practice. Though I think that a two-burner-sized griddle would help my efforts. I can’t seem to get my flip on using a regular pan.
Anyways, back to POACHED EGGS.
In the Slashfood post, they link to Rob @ b3ta, who seems similarly challenged (at least as far as egg poaching goes). In Rob’s “How to poach an egg” post, he comes to grip with the myriad of conflicting egg poaching instructions available in the tubes, and tests four well selected methods. I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but the last method tested looks to be nearly foolproof (which is good) and easy (which is great). Sounds like a winner to me.
Once again, I shall throw caution to the wind and try egg poaching this weekend. Once I have this art mastered, I’m off to the arena of Hollandaise - and then ALL BR

Well, that’s about all there is to it. Really. I wanted to see it in the theater, but couldn’t find anyone who wanted to go. So I finally rented it via netflix. Oh Man. Craptacular. Not a single five minute chunk of time passed without severely cringe-worthy dialog. And the fight scenes weren’t even that exciting. The only saving grace is that nobody ever said “Freedom isn’t free”.

I try to order from Powell’s, I really do! But when I get zombie novel cravings at work, no bookstore has a more fiendishly helpful “suggestion” engine than Amazon.
I just dropped a stupid amount of money on zombie books (including some Zombics). Thank goodness I haven’t yet been conned into Amazon Prime, otherwise I’d spend even more money on books.

Ah, Leroy Jenkins. Good times.
Anyways, I’ve been begging to get a rotisserie chicken for dinner for a long time, but it’s just never worked out. Last night, the most wonderful girl ever brought one home from Costco. It was an excellent and surprisingly tasty surprise. I nearly swooned :)
Who knew Costco chickens could be so good?
Thanks babe!
[Update]
In other news, I can’t wait to try alien rotisserie chicken. Go space chicken!!

No, not possum. Kitten.
On Saturday morning, we adopted a girl kitty from our friend Katy at Cat Adoption Team, a no-kill cat shelter. Even though some of these are at j75.5’s blog, I’ll repost some pictures here. One up front, and the rest after the jump.
