Wait, we’re supposed to fear our police?

Springfield Massachusetts’ new police commissioner (William Fitchet) thinks we should.
I’ll tell you what I’m afraid of - people like him.
Understanding that we do in fact need to fear police, here’s a link of the top ten things *not to do* when dealing with police.

Seems to me that he’s confused “respect” with “fear.” There’s a big difference — in fact they couldn’t be more opposed.
… and a question for you, caused by that last link: is it really a felony to have a live-in girlfriend? If so, how bizarre! Over here in the Antipodes, that’s called “a de facto relationship” - and has the same weight in law as marriage.

I agree with your division of respect and fear.
As for the live-in girlfriend thing in the second link… There’s no law against co-habitating. The article was a bit vague, but the crux is that if someone claims you assaulted them and they happen to be someone you’re in a consenting or blood relationship with, the crime is elevated to domestic violence. Even if that person decides that maybe slamming the door on your way out after an argument doesn’t exactly mean you assaulted her, if the complaint is made and the police find out you live there too, there’s no retracting the complaint and you’re going to jail for at least an evening. Well-intentioned laws gone too far.
