Best Crayon colors ever!

Seriously, Flesh of Christ is a freaking color? Also, Christ was peach colored? And there were dinosaurs on the Ark? I knew I was missing out on learning the whole story when I skipped religion class in high school. Then again, it was a Catholic high school, so I probably just missed the pederasty. Am I right, am I right? Huzzah!

PS: Work is making me go insane (but pictures like this certainly aren’t helping). Cut it out, Internet!

Does John McCain color with perfect white?

Farming with Dynamite!

Well, I’ve never tried real farming or working with dynamite before, but this pamphlet has me pretty much sold on the idea that Farming with Dynamite is a truly awesome way to go about life.

Aside from the indubitable charm of combining a respected agricultural tradition with large explosions, the booklet is very much a marketing gem. From 1910, an easy and clear read; you should take the time to read it yourself. Excellent wording, data presentation and well conveyed buoyant enthusiasm.

Also, if you know where I can get an inexpensive farm and some dynamite, please let me know. I want to blow holes in the ground and then plant things there. Cultural metaphors, I’m looking at you!

On mortgages…

I am very sick and tired of hearing people whine about how the big, evil, Bear Stearns bank got bailed out, but the little guy - Joe Homeowner - is left out to dry and isn’t getting any mortgage relief. “It’s corporate welfare!!!” “It’s so unfair!!!”

Well, you know freaking what? Joe Homeowner isn’t being left out to dry by the bailout. You know why? Because there are a hell of a lot fewer stupid homeowners than reasonable homeowners who bought homes sensibly and are making their payments. So the average homeowner isn’t screwed over by the bailout, they’re helped.

You know why?
Because if a large firm like Bear Stearns goes tits up without any bailout, that affects the WHOLE national and international economy - negatively. That sends the dollar down in value. This means that everything else (especially imported goods) cost more.

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have elected (TWICE!) the morons that caused the dollar to tank in the first place, so our economy would have been able to withstand the ripple from a bank failure. But an already compromised dollar? It can’t take it! The bailout was necessary to preserve not only the the big wigs, but also the average person who needs to buy food and keep a roof over their heads (even if it’s *gasp* rented).

Now, if some silly bastard takes out a loan that they can’t pay, and they can’t get out of the loan by selling their property because their house value dropped and their mortgage is valued higher than the house - they get foreclosed on. This means that they have to move out, get an apartment, and deal with a black mark on their credit record. Further, if the bank has to sell the house at a price lower than the mortgage was worth the time of foreclosure, the former homeowner does in fact owe the difference. This is part of the mortgage contract that was signed. This isn’t unique. This is how virtually all loans in the modern world work. If you can’t pay the difference (that you contractually owe), then you can declare bankruptcy and get a slightly larger black mark on your credit. This does NOT take away your ability to live within your means in apartment. It just means that you have bad credit and rent instead of owning.

I own a home. I bought within my means. And barring a very severe economic downturn, I’ll be able to continue affording it. In fact, even if I lost my job and had no money in reserve, my unemployment check alone would cover not only my monthly mortgage and utility bills but would even have room left over for other things, like gas and food.

That doesn’t mean I didn’t get a little jealous (and vaguely suspicious) when I saw acquaintances in my same income level purchasing far more expensive and luxurious homes.

But how many of those people are still in those homes? Just one - and he’s up to his ass in debt that keeps mounting.

In summation, if Bear Stearns went down without any bailout, it would affect the purchasing power of every dollar in the US - affecting everyone. Especially those that had even larger debts to pay off due to mortgage defaults. More importantly though, it would greatly affect all the people out there who made good decisions.

Come to think of it, allowing a financial failure that affects even those who made the right choices is just like re-electing George W. Bush a third time. Unconscionably moronic.

And now, enjoy a funny sub-prime cartoon

I’m losing my battle against owning a PS3

I hate Sony. For too long has their proprietary shit machines have bummed me out. Everything, that is, except their consoles.
When the Wii and PS3 launched, I bought a Wii - because that was the sensible thing to do. I don’t need a $600 video game console with $50 games. Especially not when I just built a $1200 smoking fast desktop PC.

And yet, hooker killing in a game that might make me feel bad about it beckons mightily…
And if rt would just tell how the media streaming is, I could finally make a choice to abstain, or to plunge headlong into a fiery chasm of vicarious violence that offers an appalling look at myself in a world with slightly fewer consequences.

Update
Okay, so the PS3 doesn’t actually function as a network media streamer. Very disappointing.
If you want to stream media to the PS3, it looks like you have to run some app on *another* computer on your network to stream media that’s been selected in the app to the PS3.

Weak sauce, Sony - royal weak sauce.

Looks like a Mac mini is in my future.
(Well, either a mac mini or another soft-modded original xbox, which functions pretty damn well as a media streamer, with the exception of easy non-xbox remote setup…)

Egg Poaching for Maroons. (that includes me)

This post is sort of a placeholder for myself, but may be interesting for other similarly-challenged would-be egg poachers. Over at Slashfood, I just read a post about poaching eggs. I love poached eggs, and I consider a good Eggs Benedict to be the absolute height of breakfast pleasure.

Also, I love eggs for breakfast. I’ve been able to make all things egg-breakfast-related with relative competency except: Omelets, Eggs over Easy, and POACHED EGGS.

Poached eggs baffle me. I haven’t even tried that often, because every attempt yields disheartening results at best and egg-splattered temper-tantrums at worst.

Omelets? Well, let’s just say they they usually turn out to be a delicious scrambles, with only an occasional omelet produced. This does not bother me too much, but I would love to get better. That’s another blog post though.

Eggs over Easy? Well, in my opinion, the cardinal sin of of egg frying is a broken or hard yolk - which I seem to run up against most of the time when attempting this. I’m certain I can master this one with some more practice. Though I think that a two-burner-sized griddle would help my efforts. I can’t seem to get my flip on using a regular pan.

Anyways, back to POACHED EGGS.
In the Slashfood post, they link to Rob @ b3ta, who seems similarly challenged (at least as far as egg poaching goes). In Rob’s “How to poach an egg” post, he comes to grip with the myriad of conflicting egg poaching instructions available in the tubes, and tests four well selected methods. I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but the last method tested looks to be nearly foolproof (which is good) and easy (which is great). Sounds like a winner to me.

Once again, I shall throw caution to the wind and try egg poaching this weekend. Once I have this art mastered, I’m off to the arena of Hollandaise - and then ALL BR

Damn Amazon!

I try to order from Powell’s, I really do! But when I get zombie novel cravings at work, no bookstore has a more fiendishly helpful “suggestion” engine than Amazon.

I just dropped a stupid amount of money on zombie books (including some Zombics). Thank goodness I haven’t yet been conned into Amazon Prime, otherwise I’d spend even more money on books.

At least I have chicken.

Ah, Leroy Jenkins. Good times.

Anyways, I’ve been begging to get a rotisserie chicken for dinner for a long time, but it’s just never worked out. Last night, the most wonderful girl ever brought one home from Costco. It was an excellent and surprisingly tasty surprise. I nearly swooned :)

Who knew Costco chickens could be so good?

Thanks babe!

[Update]
In other news, I can’t wait to try alien rotisserie chicken. Go space chicken!!

TOTALLY PAWESOME!

No, not possum. Kitten.
On Saturday morning, we adopted a girl kitty from our friend Katy at Cat Adoption Team, a no-kill cat shelter. Even though some of these are at j75.5’s blog, I’ll repost some pictures here. One up front, and the rest after the jump.

Must. Resist. Woot-Off.

Trying. So. Hard.

I don’t need any more material possesions. Really.

Unless of course, they’re really cheap and awesome.

An excerpt from my “Insight from the Dalai Lama” daily calendar:
“Nowadays the world is becoming increasingly materialistic, and mankind is reaching toward the very zentih of external progress, driven by an insatiable desire for power and vast possessions. Yet by this vain striving for perfection in a world where everything is relative, they wander even further away from inward peace and happiness of the mind.”

Humbling SOB isn’t he?

OMFG! Txt msgs out of ctrl!

So, uh… If I’ve sent you a text message in the last 24 hours, you’ve probably received it about 30 times today. Sorry.

Every time I turn my old and busted RAZR phone on, it starts resending everything in my outbox. Luclily, I cleared my outbox yesterday afternoon, but still - sorry. I’ll try to keep my phone off until I figure out how to prevent the text message hemorrhages.

[Update : 2:05 PM] Well, I fixed my phone - I think. Removing and reseating the SIM card several times while the phone was on (and charging) was probably not a good idea, but that course of action seems to have fixed things. Of course, I also made clear threats of replacing the RAZR with a Samsung, so that might have helped too. Anyways, I also realized that I’ve had this phone for almost two years to the day. In honor of that feat (which is none too small for a mobile, especially one that takes the abuse that I dish out), I will share it’s noble record of service with you. Since I’ve had the phone, I’ve made 12,621 minutes worth of phone calls and have spent a whopping 29,160 minutes of data time (no, I’m not a nerd AT ALL - what would give you that idea?). Thanks to that unlimited data plan, I’ve also transferred just over two gigs of data, which is pretty significant for a GPRS data connection. Oh yeah, I’m *that* hardcore.

Don’t tell!

I played DDR at an arcade over the weekend. I think it might have been the first time I’ve ever tried it. I was pretty horrible at first, but I got better over the three songs we tried.

After that one game, I wanted everyone in the arcade (except one person) to leave and let me play DDR all freaking day. Last night, I played Guitar Hero on the PS2 and had a damn good time (on easy, of course). Now, I need a Wii.

Pear Clafoutis

Last night, I was invited over to a friends house for turkey leftovers with four of my most favorite people in the [entire] world. I thought I should bring something other than wine. Recently, my father delivered the yearly box of Hood River pears. Since a few inevitably go bad before I get a chance to eat them, I thought I’d try my hand at cooking a few pears. Specifically, in a desserty kind of way. After finding a pointer from Slashfood, I headed over to the Domestic Goddess and tried out her recipe for Pear Clafoutis.

It’s a great recipe. Simple, easy to follow instructions, and no missing steps or measurements. Overall, it was a very simple dish to make, except that I ended up with too much pear to fit all the custard in a simple 9 inch glass pie dish. Next time, I’ll still use three large pears and the same amount of custard, but in an 11 inch glass pie dish. I’ll also follow the instuctions and actually let it cook for the correct amount of time (about five minutes longer than i gave it). And of course, next time I’ll remember to take a picture too.

I think I’ll make one for my new work group’s Friday afternoon meeting. Hello goodwill points.

Buts and Butts.

After successfully quittting last memorial day weekend (May, 2006), I recently started smoking again. In the span of just two short months, I’d suffered what seemed (at the time) an insurmountable (and angsty) heartbreak and incredible stress at work (serious layoff worries). These things, compounded with everyday life allowed me decent excuses to have a puff here and whole cigarettes there.

About three weeks ago, things in my life began to swing the other direction. Slowly, the needle on the happy-gauge began inching back to normal - but the damage was already done and I was trapped in the clutches of smoking yet again. Fast forward a few weeks to the needle on the happy-gauge getting a good workout on the positive side…. On Friday, with the support of some old friends and lots from a really awesome and special new friend - I quit again.

Over the course of the weekend, I suffered some pretty mean headaches and many urges to be less kind than I should be. Perseverance paid off, and now I can begin the not-smoking-at-work process. This means rescheduling meetings with smokers that we had setup to occur outside, and it means finding better ways to deal with stress. Outside work, it means less time at the bars (not that I spend much time there these days) and more time focusing on *not* being selfish with my time and energy.

This time around, it also means paying more attention to the other aspects of my health. I need to spend some more time on the exercise bike, while continuing to make sure that I don’t over-indulge in some things as a “reward” for doing something else right.

Metro-Fi turns the screws on Portland a little harder…

Portland is set to get a municipal wifi network. This is good. However, they turned to wifi scheisters MetroFi to provide it. And now, it seems that MetroFi has made a deal with Microsoft’s MSN for advertising and search services. Of course, I’m very much biased against MSN Internet services for various reasons - but to subject an entire city to pages that won’t load correctly in all modern and recent browsers is pretty short-sighted. I would have much preferred either a more civic-minded provider or at the very least, an operating system/browser agnostic advertising provider. And search? Microsoft? Who even makes that association?

Of course, very little of this is directly relevant to me, since the municipal wifi network will likely not cover my area of suburbia for many years, if ever, even though I’m only five minutes from downtown, very near I-5 and the Barbur transit center (which would be a good place for municipal wifi, don’t you think?). However, I still expected better of Portland.

In semi-related news, I’m in an area serviced only by Qwest, who gets a big middle finger award for refusing to invest in fiber-to-the-crub projects for residential services. Meanwhile, Verizon is beginning to pump FiOS all over the place. I almost made FiOS availability a key factor in my last home purchase, and now I wish I had.

Love for the PT Brusier

My incredibly cool and hip ride (an INFERNO_RED 2001 PT Cruiser - Stop laughing!) is in the shop for some lovin’. It’s getting a transmission service, a tune-up, it’s side mirrors fixed, the dashlights replaced, and a potentially flammable power steering pressure hose replaced. I’ve been getting racall notices about the power steering hose for years, but I like to live dangerously.

All this in preparation for a journey to Seattle this weekend to visit a friend who is quite possibly Worse than Hitler. I am going to try to avoid stopping at Ikea during the trip, but who am I kidding? If you need anything, let me know (and help justify my meatball habit)!

I dropped my yet-to-be-pimped ride off at Beaverton Chrysler this morning. Unfortunately, they didn’t have a car available (Are you kidding me? It’s a new and used car dealership!) so I had to rent one from Enterprise. $25 bucks for the day got me a little red Chevy Cobalt. It certainly isn’t a piece of junk, but the seat does not seem to recline (the lever appears to be broken), so I’m stuck in a very upright position, and the manual window crank on the drivers side has bruised my left knee. I didn’t want to double the price of the rental by springing for insurance ($35 a day? WTF!?), but after the cobalt tried to pull a Tonya Harding on me, I wish I had bought the crap insurance so I could run the damn thing into several walls and then the river. Which reminds me, it’s been a while since I’ve played any GTA. My animated bloodlust must be satiated soon.

[Update : 12:44 PM] Whoa! The service department just called to tell me that it’ll be about $100 to replace the dash lights, and $400ish to replace the sideview mirrors! I gave them the go ahead on the lights, since I don’t want to take the dash apart myself (especially with all the rain), but the mirrors will have to wait until I have the time to buy the parts and replace them myself.

[Update : 4:00 PM] Well, the car is ready. And it’ll only cost me $516.32! Oh boy!

Note to self: Find independent Chrysler mechanic.

Portland

Usually, I love the the feeling of being connected to so incredibly many people in Portland between myself, friends, family, and the internets. Occasionally though, there’s a bizarrely coincedental overlap between people that’s slightly uncomfortable and not just a little weird.

When people say “Keep Portland Weird!!”, this is not what they mean. Oh well, things are going far too well to complain :)

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal!

I got the job. No raise and more work, but my 2.5 week vacation at Christmas is safe, and I’ve got some mega-awesome job security! And to think that I spent the last few weeks worrying about layoffs. As it turns out, my current position was in fact set to be moved offshore, and through the bits and pieces I’ve dug out of the rumor mill, people from high and low places stepped up and voiced support for me. Enough to keep me from being laid off. On top of all that, my new manager told me that I’ve been recommended to her quite a number of times, and the team decision was unanimous.

I’m good enough, smart enough, and gosh darnit, people like me!

Also, I RULE!

In financial news; GPX earnings are flat, but in light of recent business and personal windfalls and successes the board has approved a very gratuitous victory dance anyways. Current Rating: Stong Buy.

[Update : 11:49 AM] When it rains it pours. I was just notified that there’s yet another internal position open and was enthusiastically invited to apply. Needless to say, I shan’t push my luck, but will stick with the current new gig.

Cryptic Meeting Invite

The text of the meeting invite I just received from the manager I interviewed with last week:

Subject: Follow-up Discussion
Location: Grab a small room in IT
Body: Let’s talk details…

Well, that sounds like it could be a good thing. A little cryptic, but I’m still optimistic that my clearly stated “don’t pollute the internets for dollars” principles haven’t had too terrible of a negative impact on the hiring decision. The meeting is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

On a completely unrelated topic, did you know that there is a Reefer Madness movie *musical*? I do now. It’s pretty hilarious, and even has zombies. +10,000,000 points.

[Update 3:26 PM] I just visited the boss lady’s cubicle. While we were talking, she got a meeting invite from the manager who interviewed me. As far as I could gather, the purpose of the meeting is to discuss my current responsibilities (and perhaps who can take them). This is also another fortuitous sign. Coupled with other recent events (forgive the pun), I see that there has never been any reason to doubt that I am perhaps the most consistently lucky person any of you dear readers might know. I don’t know why, but this cat lands feet first - even if someone throws it across the room with buttered toast strapped its back. Also, I’m invincible.

Interviews

Ryan, put down the soda.

Okay, here’s the deal. I spent nine months of last year interviewing, hiring and training new people. I have some mad interview sk1ll5. Mainly, they consist of being completely at ease and offering candor with every response.

I was interviewed three times today. I performed very well - except for one small thing. During a demonstration of my web-fu on a whiteboard, I used the pen in the tray. TOO BAD IT HAPPENED TO BE A RED DAMN SHARPIE. Oh well. I played it off nicely, while taking responsibility for it.

The only other hitch is that this is a marketing group. I have ethical and ideological issues with some of the SEO techniques that may be used. I voiced my opinion and made it clear that I won’t participate in the pollution of my beloved intertubes through certain methods. That may count against me. I know it’s business, but I love my Internet dearly and I refuse to whore her in the name of dollars.

Also, I think I impressed someone with my database and scoop knowledge. I post this for no other reason than to make rt laugh uncontrollably. Aren’t you glad you put down the soda? Even stranger, this may be the only interview ever that having a slashdot UID of less than 30,000 is actually considered a good thing.
