Seriously, Flesh of Christ is a freaking color? Also, Christ was peach colored? And there were dinosaurs on the Ark? I knew I was missing out on learning the whole story when I skipped religion class in high school. Then again, it was a Catholic high school, so I probably just missed the pederasty. Am I right, am I right? Huzzah!
PS: Work is making me go insane (but pictures like this certainly aren’t helping). Cut it out, Internet!
Oooh…. I want!
60 mpg and the ability to run biodiesel? Sounds damn good to me.
The best part of this news? It probably means that a mass-produced biodiesel-electric hybrid is right around the corner. I can’t wait!
I couldn’t get more than 15 seconds into this thing. It is a full assault on everything good and decent in this world (much like Hillary Clinton herself).
For most of my life I thought that the concept of “having a hero” was bizarre. A few years ago, I came across writings and recordings of Lawrence Lessig. Immediately awed, engaged and inspired I referred to him as my “IP hero”. Clearly, he he is more than a hero in the single field of intellectual property. This video is an evocative and moving call for endorsement of Barrack Obama over Hillary Clinton. It is longer than most video clips on the web, but every minute is worth it.
Well, another possibly/vaguely illegal Superbowl party has been thrown. And what fun it was! Our friend Kelly makes some really awesome fried-in-lard hot wings, and they were absolutely awesome. I just ate the leftovers for lunch - and I’m glad they’re gone… A few more and I’m sure I’d have a massive cardiac failure.
To poke fun of the NFL’s silly restrictions on football games, I will now describe part of the game - without authorization of any sort.
The Giants won. They deserved it too.
Bill Belichick (the Patriots coach) left the field before the game was over, displaying an almost alarming lack of class. Not that most people expected much in the way of sportsmanship from someone who can get the NFL to cover-up a bit of cheating here and there.
Terry Bradshaw needs to have someone build him a “violating-an-interviewee’s-personal-space” alarm.
If you ask me, the best part of the game came right after the Giants scored the touchdown that sealed the win. The camera immediately panned up to Payton Manning, who was watching from a skybox. It was touching, perhaps even a bit heartwarming to see him cheering on his brother like that. That simple camera pan at the right moment showed that there are still a few decent producers out there, despite the Fox’s moronic animated football robots (how can you screw up robots Fox? Jeez!).
Tom Petty at halftime was decent.
Surprisingly, the Puppybowl was weak this year, going to commercial far too often during the Superbowl halftime. Major bummer.
Sonofabi*%#. It’s been quite the day. I made a mistake last night and have been paying for it all day - and the culmination of all the thrashing about borked up things for many, many other people. I can’t wait to go home and be done with the constant stream of today’s problems.
Currently I’m reading a book called “The World Without Us“, by Alan Weisman. I’ll admit it, I was expecting more of a “World War Z” type of book. Instead, of fictional narrative, Alan Weisman presents lots of distilled research and observation in a very piece-by-piece manner. It’s not dry reading per so, but it isn’t a real page turner either - though one of the reasons is the grim picture it paints about our long-chain-hydrocarbon filled lifestyle, what it’s costing the planet, and how long things will take to balance out once we cut . A particularly offensive bit is the amount of plastic in our oceans - not plastic bags or six-pack rings, awful as they are - but rather the amount of plastic particles – many microscopic – that are floating *in the ocean – not just on top. These little bits are being ingested by the smallest of the small and the largest of the large. And it’s all accumulated in the last 50 years. And it’s everywhere in the ocean, even the most remote places.
Even though it’s a Honda, I do drive an SUV. Sure, it gets better gas mileage than my last car (a small economy car), but it’s still a bit more than I need for everyday use. When lunchtime comes around – you used to be able to find me driving five minutes into town every day for lunch at some restaurant or fast food joint. But I’ve changed! I promise! I try to bring my lunch on most days, and when I don’t I try to eat at our on-site cafeteria to avoid the unnecessary drive into town. Sadly, the cafeteria uses Styrofoam plates for most entrees. In the past, I’ve asked our facilities manager about switching to paper plates and received a “Don’t worry, they’re pulled out of the garbage and recycled by our sanitation pickup company.” response. This hardly addresses the problem of plastic/foam plates being produced in the first place, and is of dubious value at best.
Therefore, from today forward, I will avoid using foam/plastic plates and utensils whenever possible. For lunch today? I had spaghetti and a salad from the cafeteria. I got a mild version of the “damn hippies” look, but was successfully served my spaghetti in the paper basket normally used for sandwiches. Sure, reusable plates would be even better – but one step at a time, right?
Long time, no updates. Sorry, my bad.
No no, it’s me - not you. I’ve been busy. Very busy.
This would normally be the post in which I outline all the recent goings-on. However, that would be too much for this post. And I have no time to write it all out at the moment anyways. You get a list, and I’ll promise to come back and write a post for each item mentioned here.
Went backpacking with my friend Dave.
Pace and volume at work picks up significantly.
Vacationed in Las Vegas.
Got engaged in Las Vegas :)
Had the air conditioner fixed, cleaned the carpet where it had leaked water.
Wedding planning begins.
Still haven’t been to the new Portland Ikea. (Can you freaking believe that?)
Attempting yet again to kick smoking.
Weather and laziness combine forces and drop a steamer on my garden.
Saw the symphony and part of the world’s worst movie in the same night.
I hardly feel like I need to get on a soapbox with this one, but seriously folks, what good is an “Organic” label if the ingredients of the product aren’t grown organically? Methinks someone is in the pockets of corporate America yet again - and I’m looking at you sneaky USDA chuckleheads.
I know it’s been a while without updates, my dear readers, but be dismayed no more! I shall provide a list of recent happenings of interest in bullet point form, and will elaborate extensively in the body. This means that you have to deal with my Wordpress theme’s nasty habit of not underlining links (Even on mouseover! So naughty!) and look for the “Continue Reading” link near the bottom of this entry to get the good stuff.
The new cabinet was delivered today… just in time for me to put off assembly until next week. I’m looking forward to getting through the messy and vaguely chaotic period that follows housemate egress, ingress, and the arrival of new furniture.
Actually, I’m not looking for a deluxe apartment in the sky – nor do I want to move.
However, I might be moving anyways.
And now for some backstory…
There’s a flag lot behind my house. Development of this lot started late last summer and is set to wrap up at the end of this month. The current owner is also developer and is also acting as the general contractor. The house being built is very large and upscale (think ~3500 square feet and ~$625K). The owner/developer/GC (who we’ll refer to as Mr. Unreasonable form here on out) has a thick accent – however it seems like he speaks and understands English *much* better when he is talking to the English speaking members of his construction crew than he does when he talks to me. I’ve had a lot of problems with the way things have gone, and I’ll outline them briefly below:
In general, I’m pretty pleased with trees. I like them and on occassion, I’ll even hug them. Over at Neatorama, there’s a lovely post about some pretty amazing trees. Go check it out. And no, I don’t think the first tree is particularly more special than your average tree, but keep going down the list, some of the stuff is pretty amazing. And remember, April 27th is Sunny Bono Arbor Day and you should go out and plant a few trees!
